I love introducing my kids to classic books. We most recently read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together by Roald Dahl. This is such a fun book that I decided that having a book club party would be a great way to enjoy this classic even more. I kept the party super simple and my kids absolutely loved it! You could make your party as simple as mine or enhance these ideas to make it a bit more extravagant. You could even do this as a birthday party idea.
We found a large, illustrated copy of the book at the library that was really enjoyable to read with the large font and great pictures on nearly every page.
My kids loved looking at the illustrations as we read this together.
We also sent out invites to the party a month ahead to give my daughter’s friends enough time to read the book. Here is a template that you could use and just add your info to it using text boxes.
Here are some discussion questions to use to start off your book club party.
We watched the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie during our party. We went to the store and bought candy from the bulk bins and placed them in our apothecary jars. The kids enjoyed munching on candy and eating popcorn while they watched the movie. During the scene where Violet is chewing the gum, they all got a piece of gum from the jar and chewed it.
My daughter wanted to draw pictures of her favorite character while they watched the movie, too. She drew a picture of Veruca Salt.
This was a fun way to get my kids excited about reading and the book. We had a fun evening!
