For someone new to Usborne Books & More, I have put together my Top Ten Favorite books or book series that I always refer people to as a starting point.
1. Illustrated Classics – $19.99 – ages 7 and up (although my 3 year old enjoys listening)
These are what really attracted me to becoming a consultant. My kids love me reading these to them, even my 4th grader who can be tough to please when it comes to books. Each books has several condensed classic stories. Each story has a different style of illustrations to make them feel like a different book. There are lots of books to choose from, so hop on the site and browse around. Some of our favorites are Adventure Stories (The Count of Monte Cristo, The Prisoner of Zenda, Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and The 39 Steps) and Illustrated Fairy Tales (Sleeping Beauty, The Emperor and the Nightingale, Beauty and the Beast, The Dragon Painter, The Frog Prince, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, The Swan Princess and The Emperor’s New Clothes).
2. The Big Book of Little Stories – $21.99 – ages 3 and up
This is a perfect book to read before bed. It contains 15 classic stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Little Pigs.
3. Shine-a-Light Series – $12.99 – ages 4 and up (although my 3 year old loves these!)
Pull out your flashlight (although you can still read without your flashlight, but it is more fun to shine the light behind each page) as you learn through this engaging non-fiction series. My favorites in this series include Secrets of the Seashore, The Human Body, and Wonders of the USA.
4. A Squirrel’s Tale – $11.99 – ages 3 and up
This is an interactive book where your child can move an actual cardstock squirrel through the book as he visits several animals in search of his acorns. Kids love this! Also check out A Mouse About the House.
5. Nibbles – $16.99 – ages 6 and older (again, my 3 year old loves this so I think the age recommendation should be younger)
Nibbles the book monster loves to eat books! He is nibbling his way through three classic fairy tales in this creative tale. Also check out Nibbles in the new book Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide.
6. Animal Hide-and-Seek – $15.99 – ages 0-3
This is one of my top baby books. I love that there are touchy-feely things for babies to touch as well as flaps. This is a must have for those babies and toddlers in your life! Usborne has a life-time warranty on their books and will replace them at 50% of the price.
7. See Inside Your Body – $14.99 – ages 7 and up
Usborne Books & More has the best lift the flap books. This is one of our favorites. You get to peek inside the body lifting the flaps and learning lots of great facts. My three year old loves the page that shows what happens when a person eats a pear. You can watch it move through the body.
8. The Big Book of Bugs (and others in the series) – $14.99 – ages 4 and up
These are great non-fiction books that have lots of great fold-out pages with lots of facts about big bugs. Also, check out the books in this series about trains, animals, dinosaurs, machines, trucks, tractors, body, starts and planets, etc.
9. That’s Not My…series – $9.99 – ages 0-3
This is one of Usborne Books and More’s most popular series. There is a That’s Not My book for about any animal or machine a child could like. These are great touchy-feely books that little ones love. That’s Not My Dinosaur and That’s Not My Airplane are favorites at our house.
There are several books that are great for emerging readers called dual readers. The child can read the text on the top of the page and the parent can read the bottom text. A couple of my favorites are Telling the Time (since you learn about time as well) and Book of Fairy Tales. Usborne Books & More also has lots of great phonics and learn to read books.
