I remember a friend at school bringing in Mexican Jumping Beans when I was a kid and I was so jealous and wanted my own. How could a bean jump? I was fascinated by these mysterious little beans. As I was thinking of fun things for my kids to do this summer that also would be educational, I remembered my interest in these little beans as a kid and decided to order some. There are many places to order, but here is site I like.
So what exactly are Mexican Jumping Beans? I’ve put together a fact sheet you can print out. Click for the mexican jumping beans info sheet pdf download.
To get ours moving, we would hold in our hand under my desk lamp. The movements are small, so prep your kids that they aren’t going to be doing big jumps and hops. They aren’t going to hop away like a frog. It is just slight wriggling but still fascinating.
A great book to read to your kids to learn more about Mexican Jumping Beans is Lucas and His Loco Beans A Bilingual Tale of the Mexican Jumping Bean by Ramona Winner.
I hope your kids enjoy learning about Mexican Jumping Beans !
A moth emerged this past week from one of our jumping beans! I heard something moving around in their case and I saw a moth. My kids were thrilled. We let it go and took a couple pics. It is hard to see as it is the same color as the pod.
The moth is in the bottom left corner.
The hole where the moth emerged.
You can see the empty pupa case the moth left behind.
